Potty training happens at different ages for all kids. There are some who are ready when they are only 18 months old while others are still struggling with it when they are over three years old. No matter what age your child is, there are certain things you can look for developmentally go give you signs that they are ready.
In order to start potty training, a child must be able to complete a few tasks in a row. They have to be able to associate going to the bathroom with sitting, and then wiping, flushing, and then washing their hands. If they are not able to do a few tasks then they may not be ready.
They should also be able to remain dry for a few hours. If they are aware of when they go to the bathroom and can communicate it to you then they may be ready. They also should be able to pull their pants down on their own and be able to pull them back up by themselves. If you need to do these things for them, then they will not get the whole idea of using the potty.
There are some children who decide on their own that they are done with diapers. If they are telling you that they want to use the potty you should give them a chance. Don’t be surprised or afraid of accidents as they are learning to get control of their body. Other children will be happy to stay in diapers for as long as you will let them so they may take a little more encouragement to get them to use the potty.
Many parents use rewards when their children use the potty. Even though this is common practice, be careful with it. You don’t want your child to think that they will always be rewarded for every task that they perform.
