It is a difficult task for parents to maintain their children’s academic skills during long school breaks like summer or winter break. For the parent of a child who suffers from ADHD or ADD this task can be extremely difficult. ADHD or ADD students have a very difficult time remembering what they learned in school if there is a long break from school. That is why a parent with an ADHD or ADD child must work to keep their child’s academic skills sharp during breaks.

Here are some tips to keeping those academic skills strong while your child is on a winter or summer break.

Engage In Fun Learning Activities. Many libraries and book stores offer a lot of reading and learning activities for children during summer or winter breaks. Consider taking part in these so that your child is encouraged to read and keep up their skills, while enjoying some of the fun activities.

Tutoring. Hiring a tutor isn’t as fun as engaging in activities at the library but if you are worried about your child forgetting skills such as English, writing or mathematical skills a tutor is the way to go. Don’t overdo the tutoring sessions but consider hiring a tutor once a week or once every other week. Just enough so that your child is encouraged to brush up on their skills but not enough that they will feel like they are in school.

Schedules. The schedule is a very important item for parents of ADHD students. Consider making schedules for them that have blocks of time for reading, learning and other activities. If you keep them on schedule they will be forced to have to engage in the activity and it will encourage them not to forget what they are learning.

It might be a challenging task to keep your ADHD or ADD child’s academic skills during a long break but it can be done.
