There will come a time in your parental life where you will need to leave your special needs child with a babysitter. Sometimes it is because a family emergency came up, other times it is just to get out for a bit. Whatever the reason choosing a babysitter that works well with your special needs child can be tough to find.
Not all babysitters are capable of handling your special needs child. You need to find someone who is understanding, responsible and works well with your child. Otherwise the situation with the babysitter could be disastrous. To avoid disastrous situations follow some of these steps to pre-screening your babysitter to make sure they are right for your child.
Start With a Phone Interview. Many parents of special needs children start off the relationship with a phone interview. They talk about the needs of their child and ask questions about the babysitter’s ability to handle the situation. You can usually tell if a babysitter will be comfortable with your child based off of their answers.
Introduce Them to The Child. If the interview goes well consider setting up a meeting time for your child and the babysitter. This could just be a simple play date or a lunch date. This will allow your child to become comfortable with the babysitter as well as allow you to see how the two interact together. Allow the child and the babysitter to interact together. If all goes well you may have found a match.
Choosing a babysitter isn’t an easy task. It could take many tries before you find the right person for your child. Try not to get discouraged if the first babysitter doesn’t work out for your child. There are hundreds of babysitters that are out there and eventually you will find the perfect one who is qualified and comfortable with your child.
