Every child should be on some type of sleep schedule. Sleep schedules are required for your child to be able to get the amount of sleep they need without having to fight or argue with them over sleeping. If a schedule is created it allows children to develop a pattern and things go a lot smoother. However, if you are a parent of an autistic child sleep schedules and patters can be difficult to establish.
An autistic child have been know to have difficulties falling asleep and staying asleep throughout the night. Luckily, there are various things that a parent can do to make sure that their child is able to eventually sleep through the night. Here are some tips for parents of autistic children who are looking to develop a regular sleep routine.
Make Their Bedroom Comfortable. Try to make your child’s bedroom as comfortable as possible. This will encourage them to want to stay there and sleep through the whole night. Try to tailor the room to their sensory needs by putting up soothing colors for them or objects that they enjoy. This will really help them as they will want to fall asleep in the room.
Develop a Routine. Develop a routine with your child and stick to it. If bedtime is 9 pm it is 9 pm all the time not 10 or 11. Start preparing your child for bedtime about an hour to an hour and half before their scheduled sleep time. Try to wind them down by reading and making it a relaxing time.
Daily Activities. Try to engage in daily activities that might tire your child out this can include exercise or games that are physically active. Try to phase out daily naps unless your child really needs them as they can often interferer with your child’s sleep schedule.
