Ask any child out there and they will probably tell you that they would love to have a dog for a pet. As a parent of a special needs child you might be considering that there is already so much work involved with your child that getting a pet would be too much to handle. However, there are many therapy dogs out there that can help a child with special needs and give them the pet they long for.

Companionship. Therapy dogs can make great companions for those with special needs. Sometimes these children find it hard to form bonds with other children their own age or even their parents for that matter. However, these children do form special bonds with therapy dogs and that allows them to have the companionship and friendship that they need.
Behavior Therapy. Many therapy dogs actually encourage children with special needs who have behavior problems to settle down. The relaxation that comes with a therapy dog really helps them to settle down and relax. Animals are some of the most relaxing items in the world and just giving a therapy dog to your child could really help them settle their senses and nerves.
Sensory Item. A dog can serve as a sensory item for those with sensory issues. The petting and interactions with the dog can help the child develop fine motor skills and develop their sensory skills.
Sensing a Seizure. Some therapy dogs are trained to sense a seizure when it comes on. This can actually save the life of your child if they are prone to seizures. The dog will sense one coming on and lay at their feet or notify you that they are having one and it could really save their life.
